Effectiveness of In-Cab Teaching for Trucking Fleets – Security & Compliance

Throughout a research presentation on the Fleet Security Convention in California on Nov. 11, Susan Soccolich, analysis affiliate with VTTI’s Division of Freight, Transit and Heavy Car Security, shared outcomes from a research of business motor autos that analyzed safety-critical incidences utilizing video and sensor information.

The research reveals how drivers responded behaviorally to on-board monitoring methods and training after triggered occasions, similar to cellphone use, drowsiness and different distractions.  

The research discovered that when introducing on-board monitoring methods in cabs, driver efficiency and security improve most often. VTTI tracked seven fleets, together with 116 autos and 354 drivers, to assemble 3.8 million miles of information, and located:

  • Fleet A decreased excessive severity security occasion charges by 64% throughout intervention of an on-board monitoring or teaching system.
  • Fleet H decreased excessive severity occasion charges by 37% throughout intervention.

After the 9-month path with the monitoring system, VTTI withdrew the methods and tracked the outcomes for 2 months. The fleets recorded lasting decreases in excessive severity occasions, even after the system was eliminated.

  • Within the two-months following elimination of the teaching system, Fleet A continued to lower excessive severity occasion charges by 73%.
  • Fleet H decreased excessive severity occasion charges by 69% throughout withdrawal.

VTTI tracked drivers for one month to get a way of their pure driving habits (that is known as the baseline), then launched on-board monitoring system suggestions and training for 9 months.

Distraction was recorded in 15% of Fleet A’s safety-critical occasions, and in 58% of Fleet H’s occasions.
